South Tawton and District Local History Group

OPEN ARCHIVE MEETING
Wednesday 16th November, any time 7.30pm to 9.30 p.m
Victory Hall, South Zeal.
Complimentary light refreshments.

We will be repeating last Spring’s successful Open Archive evening when highlights from the Parish Archive will be on display and the full contents of this resource will be available for perusal and study. Everyone is welcome.

Sadly the number of active members in our Group has dwindled to the point where our ideas for future exhibitions, archive development, local research and practical projects are all on hold. With the longer winter evenings ahead we would like to engage more people to get involved in these – no committee meetings to attend or major events to run, just a number of useful and interesting tasks which will help keep the Archive live and extend its usefulness for the future. These include:-

  1. Establishing and collating new contemporary collections of press cuttings, obituaries, photographs, and property sales particulars.
  2. Sorting and cataloguing recent photographic additions, and updating the ‘house histories’ collection.
  3. Providing details and supplementary information on line for the South Tawton photographic collection located on the Dartmoor Trust’s Dartmoor Archive web site.
  4. Reviewing our collection of ‘Topic Packs’ which cover a wide range of local places and activities, to catalogue and develop individual Pack contents, and to identify and work up fresh subjects that expand their coverage.
  5. Researching contributions to a future Exhibition around the themes of communications and utilities – ancient routes, rights of way, roads, transport, water supplies, electricity and telephone.
  6. Updating the spreadsheet catalogue of Beacon magazine articles 2011 - 2016.

Finally we are equipped to develop our small collection of oral archive recordings – help is needed planning and arranging interviews, transcripting and editing recordings, and establishing a storage and retrieval system. Technical assistance and training to carry this out is available.
So, there is much that could be done, and all offers of help will be very welcome. The present Archive is not at risk but for the present the Group’s activities are inevitably curtailed without more people being involved. Even if this is outside your scope, do come along on the 16th November to see and enjoy the resource we hold.
